CHARLOTTE SCHMID-MAYBACH: Veiled Terrain

July 12 – August 23, 2025

Opening reception: July 12th, 6–9PM

Veiled Terrain is an exhibition of Charlotte Schmid Maybach’s photographs, transformed from realistic landscapes to dreamy, melancholy assemblage, using unexpected materials. Schmid-Maybach begins by photographing both natural and urban landscapes, most often from California and the Pacific Northwest. Each photograph is then printed on silk or kozo paper, a special kind of Japanese paper made from mulberry trees. Sometimes Schmid-Maybach will stitch these images into a grid before using a free-motion embroidery machine to sew on the printed photographs. In addition, she often layers gauze and printed silk on top of her sewn images. Schmid-Maybach may even attach small found objects, to add more depth and dimension. The result feels more like tapestry than photography. “My intervention blurs the line between what’s real in the photograph and what’s beyondthe image.”

HILLARY GRUENBERG: Enchantment

Gruenberg’s work is characterized by a unique assemblage of tactile materials, including paper, leather, fabric, paint, gold leaf, silver leaf, and sewing. Relinquishing control over the outcome is vital to Gruenberg’s process. She holds no formal expectations when creating each piece, choosing solely to focus on finding beauty and enchantment in the unexpected.
