These new works are a departure from the formalistic vessel-based sculpture he created during his time in Los Angeles. The title “Mnemonics” derives from the vessel used as metaphor or memory device for the human body. In his early works, Stephen reduced the figure to vessel form, using wheel thrown elements, assembling minimalistic “light and space” sculpture, and isolating unglazed white vessels.
